Welcome, to On Track Daily! Our mission is to continue working toward our larger goals with small daily challenges that keep us focused on the changes we want to make. We want to challenge you do the same!
It started in 2010 when we noticed we had grand ambitions at the beginning of the year and then quickly returned to old habits. To stay focused, we started challenging each other with simple tasks that can be accomplished in one day and help us to work toward our larger goal. Our goal is to make the world a better place. It basically divides into three categories: 1) the actual world (the environment, community, etc.), 2) our mental world (spirituality) and 3) our physical world (the ever present desire to exercise and eat healthier).
Along the way we noticed other people were having trouble staying motivated to work toward their goals. The surge of people at the gym would dwindle by Valentine’s Day. The smiles from co-workers returned to morning grunts. The warm bed had a stronger pull than the running shoes at the door. Daily struggles and life in general dragged us back to the fast food line for one quick meal because we were so busy that day. Plans to pray and meditate ended up asleep on the couch in front of the TV.
Our theory is simple. The answers to the worlds/your problems are not gigantic goals that are un-attainable. They are small, manageable goals that are attainable every day. For example, how many of us started the New Year by saying, “I am going lose 25, 50, or 75lbs?” While this is a great goal, we believe that setting the bar so high decreases your odds of success greatly. Why not make a smaller, daily goal instead? For example, start the day off by saying “I am going to avoid condiments today.” A small goal that is easy to accomplish yet it will still reduce your caloric intake as well as your sodium, saturated fat and simple sugar intake. By making this small reduction, and others like it, you can start chipping away at that larger goal.
How about this example: Let’s say you set a goal for yourself to “become a saint.” You decide that you are going to go to Church every day and twice on Sunday. You are going to give all your money to charity and live a life that is without fault. While it would be incredible if you can do this, the odds are against you. So why not live the life of a saint in a small way? Does your neighbors’ drive way need to be shoveled? Do you smile at people when you see them? When you say, “how’s it going” are you actually interested in how the person you asked is feeling?
These are just two small examples of daily goals that are easily achievable and have the potential to have a huge impact on your world.
We challenge you this year to join us! Every day we will post one small thing that you can do to work toward your goals of making the world a better place and improving your mental and physical health.
